Should senate drop the bill on gender equality in the sharing of in­heritances? - Adesewa - 12-29-2016 The Sultan of Sokoto, Al­haji Sa’ad Abubakar lll has kicked against the National Assembly Bill on equality in the sharing of in­heritances between male and female children. He charged the Senate to dump the proposed law because it is against the Islamic religion and, therefore, unacceptable to Muslims. The bill, among others, seeks equality for male and fe­male children in the sharing of inherited family wealth or property. It further proposed that a widow is entitled to the custody of her children unless it is con­trary to the interests and wel­fare of the children. Similarly, the bill provides that a widow shall have the right to remarry any man of her choice and should have the right to a fair share in the in­heritance of her late husband’s property and the right to live in her matrimonial house. But the Sultan, who spoke on Tuesday in Gusau at the closing of the 20th Zamfara State Annual Qur’anic Recita­tion Competition, declared that “our religion is our total way of life; therefore, we will not ac­cept any move to change what Allah permitted us to do. Should the senate drop this bill as called for by the Sultan of Sokoto?
