THE DAWNING OF A NEW DAY - alpha - 05-31-2017 English, Nigeria’s official language and by extension the world’s lingual franca is spoken by about eight hundred million people across the globe. So it’s heartwarming on Wednesday 30th May, 2017 during inter-ministerial meeting between the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education that the Nation’s Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu said mathematics and science subjects will be taught in indigenous languages from primary school to secondary school. While this seems to be a welcome development borrowing a leave from Asia’s nations of China and India which have their medium of instructions in the local language for their pupils and those nations are now renown for producing best Doctors and Engineers in the world over; our challenges will be which of the indigenous languages are we going to use in a nation that is divided along religious and ethnic lines? |
