PDP Crisis: Sheriff set to meet Obasanjo
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Chairman,
Ali Modu Sheriff, and members of his National Working
Committee, NWC, are set to meet with former President
Olusegun Obasanjo over the lingering leadership crisis
rocking the party.
Prior to his tearing of his membership card few years
ago, Obasanjo was a former Chairman of the party’s
Board of Trustees, BoT.
Disclosing this, National Secretary of the Sheriff’s
faction, Wale Oladipo said the move was part of
consultation with the party’s leaders which was aimed
at restoring normalcy to the former ruling party, Punch
reports.
According to Oladipo, “We will meet former President
Obasanjo. He is our leader and he is also a former
president elected on the platform of our party.
“We have high respect for him as a person and the
office he occupied. Don’t forget that he was also a
former Chairman of our BoT.”
On Sheriff’s forcefully entry onto the party’s National
Secretariat, Wadata Plaza in Abuja over the weekend,
Oladipo said the constitution of the party put his office
as the custodian of the secretariat.
The
National Secretary frowned at the decision of the party’s
BoT Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin, to hold the keys to
the complex.
He said, “It is not right for the chairman of the BoT to
claim that the keys were with him. The constitution of
our party stipulates which office is the custodian of the
national secretariat.
“How did the keys get to him? Assuming there was a
crisis, why not keep the keys with the secretary of the
illegal caretaker committee?
“But if he had reported to the police, then that is good.
He should also tell the police what section of our party
constitution gives him the power to keep the keys.”
Following the ruling of a port Harcourt Appeal Court
affirming him as the Chairman of the party, Sheriff had
visited former President Goodluck Jonathan, ex
Chairman of the party’s BoT, Tony Anenih as part of his
consultations aimed at resolving the crisis.
