There is anxiety in Nigeria’s political scene over suggestions that the present administration is planning to impeach Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state anytime soon.
There are allegations of a plot to impeach Fayose because of his criticism of the federal government. Reports that the governor could be impeached soon is partly fuelled by the travails Fayose is going through at the hands of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which froze the governor’s personal account over allegations of graft.
Added to this, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti state claims to have uncovered evidence against Fayose which could have serious implications on his political career. The party is a statement on Thursday, July 21, dismissed claims by the governor that he has been discharged and acquitted by the Federal High Court over an alleged N1.3bn poultry project in 2005.
The state publicity secretary of the party, Taiwo Olatunbosun, in a statement on Thursday, July 21, said the fraud case instituted against Fayose by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is still pending at the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti.
However, the recent disclosure by the APC has generated anger among some Nigerians who have accused the Buhari administration of trying to impeach Fayose for his criticism againstn the federal government.
Meanwhile, counsel to Fayose, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), says he is eagerly waiting to be served with the court papers, regarding the suit filed by wife the of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha against his client. Ozekhome (SAN), who told The Punch that that his client had not been served with Aisha’s court papers, questioned whether the first lady had the right to sue a governor who had immunity under section 308 of the 1999 constitution. The media had reported that Aisha dragged Fayose to court for repeatedly alleging that she was one of those indicted for involvement in the multi-million dollars Halliburton scandal.
