At least eight people have been sent to their untimely death when they were burnt to death by a mob at Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara of Zamfara state as a result of alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad by a student of college.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday when a male student (not identified at the time of filing this report) of the institution was alleged to have committed blasphemy during an exchange of words with a supposed Muslim friend, a situation which caused a tensed atmosphere in the school resulting in the jungle justice.
Investigations revealed that a mob had penetrated into the house where the alleged person was said to be hiding to avoid being lynched. Unfortunately, they gained access to the house and set the house ablaze along with seven other persons in it.
The Police in the state confirmed the incident and imposed an indefinite curfew in the town with a view to preventing further violence in the form of reprisals and restoring peace in the area.
Spokesman of the police in the state, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shehu Muhammad, in a press statement, warned residents and potential dissidents against violating the curfew order or be prepared to be arrested and face prosecution.
The police then called on religious leaders in the state to engage their faithfuls to embrace peace and shun violence of any kind so peaceful coexistence could thrive.
However, the polytechnic have been shut down indefinitely by the school authority to prevent further violence.
